Report Emergency Pay Bill

My water bill is higher than usual. What should I do?

  • Updated

Think back on the previous months’ water usage. Do you have a lawn or garden that you watered or a pool that you filled? Maybe you had extra guests in your home? That extra usage can be the source of your higher bill.

I can’t think of any reason my water use could be significantly higher.  What should I do next?

You may have a leak and the first thing to check is your toilets. A leaky toilet can waste up to 1,000 gallons of water a day. Remove the lid from your toilet tank. The water level should be 1” below the top of the tank for it to work properly.

Next, check for leaks. Follow these simple steps or check out our Ginny on the Job video to learn how to perform a Toilet Leak Test:

  • Remove the tank lid and put 10 drops of food coloring in the back.
(Green or blue food coloring works best)
  • Replace the lid and don’t flush.
  • Check the next morning. If you see food coloring in the toilet bowl, you have a leak.
